What is AAC? 

Just like speech there are many types of AAC. 


Unaided Communication (does not involve equipment): 

  • Body Language 
  • Gestures/Pointing 
  • Eye gaze
  • Facial Expressions 
  • Vocalizations
  • American Sign Language 

Aided Communication (Low and High tech): 

Low-tech (do not need batteries):  

  • Pen and paper 
  • Communication Boards/ charts/ books 
  • Pictures, symbols and photos. 
  • Alphabet Boards 
  • ETRAN frames for eye-gaze 
  • Word boards

High Tech (need battery and voice output): 

  • Single message switch/ multiple message switch 
  • Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA) 
  • iPad with communication app loaded on it (LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat, Proloquo2Go, Sonoflex, ect.) 
  • Communication systems specifically designed for communication.
